My Journey as a Giving Grove Orchard Steward

For the past three years, I have had the incredible privilege of being a Giving Grove orchard steward at my children's elementary school. Together with my steward partner, Aviva, I've embarked on a journey that involves not only caring for the orchard but also fostering a deeper connection between nature and education.
The Orchard: A Place of Learning and Growth
Ten years ago, volunteers planted 20 trees and 4 berry brambles in the heart of the campus. At the time, the elementary school was closed due to low attendance. The orchard was planted to foster community and encourage the school district to reopen the school. Little did we know that 10 years later the school would be reopened and busting at the seams with happy smiling faces and that the orchard would become an outdoor classroom, offering students a unique opportunity to connect with nature and witness the magic of growth firsthand.
The Bounty of Nature: From Harvest to Community Sharing
Every year, the orchard rewards our care with a harvest of free, organic produce. The yield varies, ranging from 500 to 900 pounds of fruits and berries. What makes this experience even more fulfilling is the way we share the harvest. Around 50% of the produce goes to the families, faculty, and staff of the school, nourishing our immediate community. The remaining 50% is left for the community surrounding the school, allowing them to indulge in the joys of you-pick, forging connections beyond the school's walls.
Surprising Lessons from Orchard Stewardship
Throughout my journey as an orchard steward, we've been astounded by the unexpected lessons that have emerged. Children, for instance, always overestimate the age of the trees, attributing centuries of growth to them. Pruning fruit trees, a task that initially seemed daunting, has turned into a cathartic and enjoyable activity akin to cleaning out a cluttered space. But perhaps the most intriguing aspect has been the transformation of the trees into "tree babies," each with its distinct personality and quirks. And let's not forget the undeniable temptation of consuming fruit to one's heart's content – a challenge that I, as a steward, can certainly relate to!
Ownership and Connection: Fostering Pride and Community
One of the most heartwarming revelations has been the ownership children take in the orchard. As soon as they discover the joy of picking fresh fruit and comprehend the orchard's role as a cherished school asset, a sense of pride and ownership blooms within them. It's a sight to behold as they excitedly lead their parents on tours, showcasing the trees they've come to love and care for.
Appreciating the Local and Micro Impact
While discussions about the macro-level impact of urban orcharding are frequent at The Giving Grove, it's equally vital to pause and appreciate the local and micro-level effects. Through our stewardship, we've not only cultivated fruits but also nurtured a sense of community. The orchard has become a place where students learn, families gather, and friendships blossom. It has become a canvas for life lessons, an arena for hands-on education, and a source of shared memories.

My journey as a Giving Grove orchard steward has been nothing short of transformative. Aviva and I have not only nurtured trees but also the hearts of those who pass through the orchard's embrace. As I look back on these three years, I am filled with gratitude for the surprising lessons, the bonds formed, and the flourishing community that has blossomed alongside the trees. The orchard stands as a testament to the beauty of stewardship, the power of nature, and the profound impact that can be achieved one harvest, one child, and one connection at a time.
